Odd that it happened in the cruise.

Bomb/structural failure? jet upset over the Alps? Weather? Unreliable instruments? Could be a multitude of things but should be easy to find the black box.

Following the PPRuNe thread on said crash - they really like a punch up on there! Makes PH look gentile.
Yeah but at least they're pilots, so know a little about what they're talking about. On here, it'll be an IT Technician who has read a Tom Clancy book (twice) getting angry because another IT Technician doesn't believe him. hehe

That's the theory I'm most aligned with.

If the pilots were still in control, heading for the mountains would have been the last place to aim for given other possible options.
Why on earth would they disengage the autopilot during a decompression? They then BOTH forgot to follow procedures which are to don the oxygen mask before descending to 10,000 or the Minimum Safe Altitude (if higher)

So they apparently made three major mistakes?

Perhaps,

Isn't the basic formula for an accident three elements?
The point is, the autopilot is engaged in the cruise. You wouldn't ever disengage it in a decompression. You first put on your mask then establish communication then descend using the automatics. You only set a decent to 10,000ft or higher initially.

You're suggesting they both ignored all those procedures and started a manual descent and became incapacitated?

Looking at the path, it doesn't look like the autopilot was disengaged. Instead something has caused the descent while they were incapped.

Crashes often are a perfect storm of mistakes.

To descend using the autopilot, don't you need to set an altitude to descend to first?

Quick question, if there is a lose of pressure, do the air masks not come down? Therefore, no one would be knocked out?
Only in the cabin, the pilots put in the oxygen masks after removing them from a 'quick release' stowage area beside their seats.

Looks like they have the black box, should take long to find out what happened.

Helios was a Boeing. This incident was an Airbus where the ECAM is not shy of letting you know (and well in advance) that there is an issue with the cabin pressure.
Neither is the 737's pressurisation system but the pilot(s) overrode it.

Too much news & speculation unfortunately. What's the point of BBC etc having live updates of every minute detail. I preferred the old way, facts...

I nipped out for a couple of ales earlier and the news on the telly in the pub was on about this recent air crash.

They had the 'aviation expert' in the studio for an interview. The News Caster asked "So these black boxes in aeroplanes, they're not actually black are they? They are painted orange which must make them easier to see... and find..."

I nearly fell off my stool in disbelief whilst the rest of the clientele pondered and seemed to be sagely enlightened.

I pity this world.
It's a moot point. 150 people are dead, educating people about black box colours won't make a difference now or ever.

How quickly does asphyxiation occur following decompression?
Your time of useful consciousness depends on hight weight age etc but you're looking at around 30 seconds before you're not able to function properly.

Most news these days seems to be re-tweets or a re-hash of something posted on-line by somebody else.
Yup, I wrote some trouble making rubbish on pprune years ago just for a laugh and it appeared briefly on the sky ticker tape as something an "aviation expert had said" hehe tts.

Does anyone know how unusual it is to have kept the names of both pilots a secret up to this point? It seems strange to me, but is there any 'normal' process over such things.
I'm really glad they're doing it. The next of kin have been informed.

Imagine being the pilots loved ones and having the press camped outside your house, asking your neighbours questions and digging into their past for anything 'in the public interest'.

People posting nonsense on the Internet about you.

Mainly muttering to myself - suicide is an extremely selfish act at any time, but to take 149 innocent men, women & children with you?

That is utter, utter insanity!
Precisely. Like impacting the Alps at speed? Throw yourself off a cliff there but leave innocent people alone.

Assuming this is the awful truth then it is 149 counts of murder.
These comments are exactly why I'm glad the crew's names haven't been released.

You mean the two bongs like the sound of the seat belt on lights, etc?
Might be the autopilot being disengaged.

It then calls you a retard even before you've landed.
