PH favourite Tony Martin is being held again.

I wonder what the specifics of this case are?

Doesn't explain why you habitually seem to be wearing boxing gloves when typing on said tablet, given your bizarre lexical style.
Eh?

It's more to do with autocorrect vs. Dislexia.
Surprised auto correct didn't have a better stab at correcting that, too!

FFS, really?

Just how more pathetic can this get?
What do you mean? Pathetic that the authorities took action you mean? Or pathetic from your perspective that the action required so much resource? Or pathetic that the idiot made the boasts?

Pathetic in that the police seem to be allowing the press to dictate their actions.
The authorities appear to be reacting to the individual making statements about the illegal ownership of firearms. Statements made in the press. How is that a case of the Police being dictated to by the press? I don't understand what you mean. Should there be no reaction?

So, just what will be said when no firearms are discovered?

Arrest him for wasting police time?
What will you say when (sic) illegally held firearms are found?

(in answer to your question - I'd fully support your suggestion!)

I remain intrigued, though. If a notorious man such as he, a man convicted of murder by shooting (later reduced to manslaughter on appeal) boasts he holds illegal firearms do you think NFA is the appropriate response? I'd want it taken seriously... I certainly don't think the reaction of the Police is pathetic. Tony Martin mouthing off is pathetic.

Can't see why Martin 'mouthing off' is pathetic. The press went to him for an opinion, and he gave it.
I'm not particularly interested in his opinions (of the recent murder). He can possess those as much as he wants. He can tell all and sundry. I think his decision to follow up any opinion by boasting to the press he possesses firearms is the pathetic bit. If you really must possess illegal firearms I would have thought the daftest thing you might do would be to tell the press!

(Also, i find it amusing you call him notorious)
Surely that is exactly what he is?
Tony Martin may or may not be in possession of illegally held firearms but his possession of notoriety is a given, surely?

I spoke to a guy today who had been released from prison at the end of last year following 2 years for burglary.

So no £5 to pay there..... just 24 months of porridge!

Edited to add - I didnt want to shoot him!
Off topic

A 2 year sentence or 2 years served? Hefty either way. Must have been very naughty.

2 years wouldn't be enough to qualify for significant rehabilitation would it? One of the many problems with The System is it remains entirely likely your associate (at best) will struggle very hard to make an honest living on his release. Shameful.

You lefty, BBC-loving, liberal, New Labour, hand-wringing Guardian reader - did I miss any of the insults used by the simpletons on here?

How dare you mention "rehabilitation" - he should be shot as soon as he walks out of the gate. YES OR NO DO YOU AGREE??!?!!!?!?
I aimed for sanctimonious tosspot!

Surprised he got "good" support prior to and upon release. Fingers crossed he makes an honest living going forward - for everyone's sakes .

Sounds a bit vague to me. Couldn't you simply answer "yes", "no", or "5", please?

I think the point being made is that to be in receipt of convictions might make one in the eyes of another (even more strongly opinionated) poster to be "not useful to society".

Nothing to do with a superiority complex(sic).

For what it is worth I read one of those la-di-da degrees at one of those la-di-da universities where we spent an awful lot of time discussing and studying Ethics. Ethics is simultaneously tedious and enlightening but having studied it so extensively I can recommend some reading for everyone's enrichment. Banging on about State sponsored killing due to "usefulness" (or lack thereof) can quickly lead to discussions about euthanasia for the disabled, geriatricide and even infanticide.

Well I found it interesting anyway.

Maybe viewed with rose tinted specs! At the time it bored me as much as it enlightened me!

so this still does not answer the basic question of what do you suggest we do with the likes of Mr Cregan?

please don't try and suggest that occasionally creeping over the speed limit is anything like on the same scale of anti-social behaviour to the rest of society seems a little pedantic?
You ask too many questions! It's hard to keep up.

Just in this post;

Cregan? Long custodial with very focussed treatment/rehabilitation (deferring to proper, non-Internet-looking-for-simple-solutions-to-complex-problems experts)

Suggesting blah blah blah? I wasn't. I was merely trying to explain the nuances of another's post that you had failed to understand. Your sentence didn't make sense, by the way, but I got your intended point.

I'm going to have to squirm now.

I cannot answer the question "do I believe in democracy?" Without spending several thousand words discussing what I mean by believe and what I mean by democracy.

Quick answer; I'm happy that "my" "democracy" removed the death penalty years ago and continues to fight against popular support for its reinstatement.

I'm also in favour of voluntary euthanasia (under highly regulated circumstances) and a woman's right to choose (to abort a foetus (under relatively liberal terms))! Complicated $hit, huh?

This thread has really shown up just how incapable the PH crowd are at debating anything sensibly in a joined up fashion
Quoted for posterity. By far the funniest sentence I've read this year. I'm never sure with PH if several prominent posters are diagnosed or undiagnosed bi-polar sufferers or if I'm simply being played. Nothing else seems to adequately explain it.

Have a good Sunday everyone.
