I managed to get a message to her on the Russian / Ukraine equivalent Facebook vk.com - told her to go to her hotel and stay put, contact the embassy. Her bad luck. She was in Kyiv during the maidan uprising so talk about busman's holiday.
Glad you got hold of her. smile
This, might be worth giving her that FCO number posted above? If she needs any advice?

I see from the Reddit feed that the US have advised their citizens to stay in hotels and off the streets and to not try and go to the embassy so it sounds like she is taking the right action anyway

Apparently a large number of mosques are playing the call to prayer? These would be pro President then?

The firing of the judges is clearly opportunist and isn't a valid reaction to the coup attempt.

Just been chatting to the lovely Turkish family that run our corner shop - they are all convinced Erdogan did it himself to oust some members of the military and affirm his grip on power.

All that jazz said:
USA has blocked all flights from Turkey. eek Probably political muscle-flexing at Turkey's closure of Incirlik air base to them.
They did that yesterday.

I forgot to add; they also said the troops were informed it was a training exercise for civil unrest/ISIS attack (apparently)

It appears he is still pushing for the death penalty to be reinstated.
I hope he's just using it to scare the rebels and will pull back from that in some show of 'compassion' or as a sign of a civilised governance but I do fear the rhetoric he's used is too inflammatory, signalling nothing can deter him from that path and that the mask is well and truly off now..........

I wonder where the line will be drawn. The further this guy divides the population the closer they will edge towards the situation one last atrocity away from armed revolt or intervention and the inevitable power vacuum that would follow. What mandate has he been given to demolish the judicial and education systems like this?

This extreme action from Erdogan is something that could turn out to be the start of ww3.
How would that happen? Which nations would take the side of Turkey? I'd say it would more than likely test NATO and eventually lead to its restructure or demise when it turns out the other NATO partners are not willing to support or agree with the Turkish government if it were to continue along its current path.

I can see the break up of NATO in its current form coming sooner rather than later. If Turkey goes full retard then it simply cant stay.

The uncertainty in the USA isn't helping matters, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we do end up with Trump in the White House, that alone could see the end of NATO as we know it. Trump is making noises about leaving the WTO and NATO.

An EU army is a terrible idea, but what is important is that at a European level (not EU) we have good communication between nation states. Keep the EU out of it because they have proven to be very dangerous in matters like these.
