Healthcare worker tax rebate query

My mrs got sent a letter today stating that she can claim back tax on things like uniform, washing of the uniform, shoes and union subs.

Is this kosher? I have a vague memory i heard someone on the radio saying they did this and it messed up there tax payments afterwards.
