Mainly down to most places not accepting them due to the large number of counterfeits.
I understand that the £20 note is the highest counterfeit note?one might question the logic of the 500Euro note - even the twits in Brussels should have realised it was going to become the criminals choice of currency?

In safes or under mattresses?
that reminds me of a tale from an 'undertaker' I know - collects bodies where crime is not suspectedwent to a house and thousands of cash was under the mattress - unfortunately the deceased died in bed and the notes were ruined due to body fluids!
went into a Nat West branch yesterday - they only had £200 in £50's in the branch?
and they looked at me as if I was 'dodgy' when I asked for said notes
a few friends are antique dealers and they use £50's and Scottish £100's but they keep said notes 'in the trade' - none are willing to 'sell' outside the trade - closed shop
mind you the banks are all pushing for a cashless society - far easier for them
I use cards but some people take it to silly extremes - was in Tesco today and the woman in front paid 64p on a card for ffs!
cards have their uses but in my opinion you need to have a substantial cash reserve in the event of problems
imagine hackers taking down the banking system? - has already been done on a small scale
then look at Greece - your cards are about as much use as a chocolate tea pot - speaking to some in Greece, those with cash have had an absolute field day buying everything for cash - from gold/diamonds/cars to whole business's
a few Brit wheelers and dealers apparently went to Greece (with the 500Euro note) and had a field day, lol!

This is what contactless is for. Quicker than finding change.
I tend to have £20 cash, for the butchers or market stalls. Or a pint after work.
but you are totally reliant on the computer system functioning - it goes 'off' and you are FUBARI tend to have £20 cash, for the butchers or market stalls. Or a pint after work.
remember all the recent system failures when people could not get their wages etc due to a bank technical 'malfunction'?
I prefer a safety net of cash, plus you get better deals
I trust in cash/gold and Samuel Colt, lol

So you want me to have all my money cash?
I went to a pub, upon arriving told there was a power cut. I had to convince the barman to do me a few pints and I'll pay cash. He didn't want to take it. So even cash isn't always going to get you what you want.
Chances of every online money service going down? I have several banks. If something as crazy as the entire internet banking system goes down, me getting my Ocado delivery probably isn't that high up the list of prioritys.

maybe you barman did not want cash as his electronic till was not working?
I just expressed my opinions
but given the increasing sophistication of hacking I'd be reluctant to rely on any online banking system - govt's take the same view
its not 'if' but 'when' said attack happens - and it will happen with increase cyber activity by nations hostile to the UK/USA/Europe

iven the choice I'd have cash every time.
There can't be many pubs in the UK refusing cash in any circumstances. I'd say you were very unlucky.
as you say - cash every timeThere can't be many pubs in the UK refusing cash in any circumstances. I'd say you were very unlucky.
plus its untraceable in most times and that is why govt's banks want to stop cash being used
in the cyber age - the old adage - 'follow the money trail works' but not with cash
frankly I find some peoples reliance on a web/net based system very worrying
ISIL and others see a weakness in our reliance on said systems
BUT
they are not stupid - look at many of the graduates going out to join ISIL - they are not bricklayers but people trained in technology
even a temporary hack will have more effect on the West than any car bomb in Syria/'Stan etc
