How to get better fx rate when paying by credit card for USD

Hi chaps, I would like to buy something from the USA, they only accept Visa or Mastercard, and the exchange rate my natwest credit card is giving me is quite horrific. The amount is about 1000 USD and wondering if there would be any way of attaining a better exchange rate please.

American express (but they only cater for visa&mastercard), have HSBC debit card, my wife has santander debit and credit card.

The 2 I've mentioned have the best exchange rates otherwise you need someone to await a currency bod coming along

Look at the travelex supercard, that will charge you the std travelex rate and no fees. Its free too.
