So me and the Fil are sorting his garden. We need to empty the shed of paint tins, fixed solid workbench he built 30 years ago, remove chest of drawers, cuboards and all the crap that makes its way into a 1940's tin 12ft by 10ft shed over the years. Then we need to pull off the sheeting, tar roof, knock the shed down, and take the lot to the dump.

As we are about to start he turns to me and says "do you think if we just pored in petrol and burnt it it would be easier"?"

I can't believe my ears, "yes, I think it would mate".

Cue me and him trying to find matches without the MiL cottoning on to the fact we are about to commit arson.

Enjoy.

Small fire under the bench

Bit of smoke

The last time I can get near the door for an hour.

Now it really starts going, the door started to make sucking noises as it fed the fire air, cans of aerosol start exploding and flying out every now and then.

Arty

Roof comes in and we start having to douse the bay tree and fence thats on fire, all under control...........

I believe this is called a controlled fire? well thats what we told the neighbours who started looking on in horror as buildings on fire were happening.

I can confirm it is the quickest way to pull a shed down and not have to go to the dump though.

Does it really achieve anything? Unless everything is burnt into ash you just end up with a massive mess and burnt chunks of wood that still need to be chucked.
Are you kidding me ?

You know you are in the Manly DIY section of a motoring forum, and not only that but one that appreciates fast noisy cars ?

You should try here http://www.handbag.com ;-)

It was actually very helpful, it was seriously hot, all the wood went, the rust parts of the metal fell apart, the glass melted into small funny shapes, the paint was all gone, and to top it off the bech vice we couldn't unbolt ( you can see it in the first pics ) was burnt out perfectly, sprayed with some WD40 and it still works ! the heat even cracked the nuts off.

All we have now is the sheet metal to get rid of and a scrappy it coming round to pick it up. No moving, no lugging, no splinters no sweating ( apart from the when the fence caught alight and the neighbors came ) and the whole job is done.

Best bit, I got to burn a building down legally (ish)

i'd have been worried about the surrounding tree line, however i guess it had recently rained and you got away with it...
We did it yesterday, so no rain !

We were worried, Oh yes, but only once the fire was lit. It was one of those manic laughing panic things for about 20 minutes.

Bit like pulling women for a shag, your not doing it to its fullest unless you are a little bit scared you could get hurt

It achieve's the award of 1 million Man Points.

To be shared equally between the FIL and the OP.
No, mainly to the FiL, his idea, I literally thought "play it cool Ben, play it cool. Don't be too excited or you will scare him off"

When I said it was a good idea, perfectly safe and the quickest way, his face lit up like a fat kid with a cookie. He couldn't believe someone was giving him the go ahead.

When it actually started roaring ( like a small aeroplane ), MiL came out and we both shot round in panic ( we were putting out the fence at this point ) and without saying a word, like two kids, down played it.

Imagine coming out of you house to this ( and if you look the pergola is just about to catch with her favorite rose)

With two blokes with a tiny hose, trying to put out the bay tree saying "Hi, you good?, want a hand with something?" in their most calm voices.

She is owed a few hairy bks of steel points as well.

I think you've missed a trick. That could have been a whole half hour episode of reality TV (well 20 minutes, with 10 of them repeated after the ad break - just in case you forgot). Forget Cops with Cameras, now there's Men with Matches.

The pyro in me just loves a big fire. Well done. cool
Brilliant, bit like the youtube channel "Will it Blend?" I could do "Will it Burn?". I am think a Car vs Campervan, Tree Vs Telephone Pole, Plane Vs Boat, Iphone Vs Android Device, Petrol Tanker Vs Diesel Tanker.

I have now started looking at things as "how many minutes it would take to burn it down". We were debating getting my nephew (6 years old ) up to watch it but the only moment of clarity came when we thought "this is how those people you read about in the paper started off". The Pyro side of me is strong at the moment and I am needing all my strength to fight it, so a 6 year old would have no chance.

Oh yes my friend, oh yes.

Hose pipe ban ago-go.

Stick that up your arse H&S loving, risk assessment cooing bd water misers.

We paid for it, we set light to it, we used it and we put the bugger out.

Saved council money on disposal and fire brigade salaries cos we did it ourselves. Just like "during the war".

Ok it not quite the same as the war, two bloke being reckless and enjoying a good old barn burning but I have learned some firefighting skills, and that if you spray a tin metal sheet for a few seconds that has been in the fiery depths of hell for a hour, the resulting explosion of steam doesn't mean that it is safe to handle with leather gloves. Buggers went red hot straight away and shrunk on my hand making hard for the digits to exit their hot coffin. Once off they were shrunk like a woolen jumper on a hot wash and rock solid.

Every day is a school day........

I'm guessing MIL's lost her rose though?
No the rose is good believe it or not, the pergola has been carbonised somewhat though, but it still works. We pulled the rose down to the ground and lay some wood over it to hold it down, then doused it with the hose.

Suppose it is a massive bump, but I have been searching on google for a drill fuel pump and one of my old posts on PH came up. From that thread this was linked. I reread it and found myself giggling.

Thought some new members might like a bit of lesson in demolition...

I kid you not, FiL and I are talking about pulling down a couple of other sheds on the other side of the garden at the moment and rebuilding one big one.

Where are the matches...

Everytime it comes this comes up in my topics, a smile comes across my face.

I'm so much older and risk averse now.
