Opening up a load bearing wall- leaving vertical beams

Hi Chaps,

Looking into opening up an wall between my lounge and the dining room.

It is a load bearing wall, however the wife wants to make a feature of it, and perhaps, work around the load beams - opening up around them.

Do we still need to inform the local building control with structual engineering report?

I am aware that if we opening it up fully, we will need to supply the council with calculations of the load bearing beam we intend to use.
