Boxing in fuse box/gas meter - any rules?

I would like to box in my fuse box/meter/gas meter/etc... because the area they're in is perfect for hanging coats. Are there any rules regarding this? eg. it's not allowed, or it needs to be a certain size, etc...? or can i just do what i want?
