On Sunday, my dishwasher went pop - literally. RCD tripped, and the burning smell from the dishwasher suggests it's not worth fixing. It's a 13 year old Bosch.

All of my other white goods are Bosch (and similar age) but I've been disappointed with the quality of the fridge and freezer - the handles have broken off several times, and the interior baskets fracture easily in the fridge too. So I don't feel any particular loyalty to the brand.

Essential features for me are : separate cutlery tray at the top, adjustable height racks, and folding holders on both racks. This seems to rule out a lot of the options, especially a lower prices.

I understand that Bosch and Siemens share many parts and my mate has suggested the Bosch SMS69L32G which he has. I've seen it in Currys and it looks OK (although I'd prefer silver I think), but they don't have the Siemens in store. And although it costs more, I quite fancy the blue light the Siemens has when you open the door....

Any recommendations? Any other brands? Miele / Smeg / Neff tempted me but the ones I saw in Currys didn't seem to have all the options I want.

I'm thinking of the £500-600 range (and free standing) - I still haven't figured out what makes some of the Siemens worth £800!

It's not - I remember seeing that months ago and checked my serial number. Shame really - would have been a cheap solution!

OK, so Bosch or Siemens it is then.

The Bosch I mentioned at the start does do everything I want. The Siemens range is a tad confusing, because Currys have totally different models to John Lewis.

It looks like the Siemens tend to use lower power, but according to the tech specs the Bosch is slightly quieter. I'm tempted by the Siemens at JL, because it's a nice silver and has the emotive blue light when you open it (sad I know). But - I'm really not sure those two things together justify the £200 price difference!

They are, however, nearly all of their products (excluding Siemens) are made under licence which allows manufacturers to use the brand name.
Yes - I searched earlier, and found stories from people who'd bought Bosch products and then found that actually they were really made by Samsung.

Makes it a bit difficult to know what you're actually buying and what you're actually paying for!

I'm currently trying to resist ordering the Siemens SN26T597GB.

Mostly because of the shiny blue light and because it's stainless steel - which I can justify (slightly) because it's about 30% more energy efficient.

Weak arguments, and my sensible side is saying order the Bosch. Not sure which side will win yet!

Well, don't come on here complaining about it when it all goes wrong.

OK - I promise to look up some Miele!

I ruled them out because the ones in Currys did not have my essential feature list - but maybe an online check is necessary.

I must admit, I expected one or two replies at best to this thread but it seems that dishwashers are a contentious issue! wink

Neff doesn't seem an option, since at least on the John Lewis site they are all integrated. I checked Costco stock out too, and it's pretty much all Whirlpool (and one make I'd never heard of).

Miele are just too expensive - particularly since I live alone and probably shouldn't even need a dishwasher in the first place!

I think the Siemens has won, and it's what I'm planning to order. I need to wait a week or so to order it though - my job situation is about to change rather drastically, but that does have the advantage that quite soon it will be easy for me to be at home for the delivery........
