Hole in Plasterboard ceiling ..

I'm slowly re-doing my bathroom after the shower shattered and I've come to do the ceiling light above the shower.

Taking out the old one it is a huge mess where the plasterboard looks as though it was cut badly. Can I use some sort of tape to make the surround stronger? I doubt any new light would be stable. I'm at a bit of a loss at this stuff.

Thank you for the advice. I used a mixture of wood and filler in the end as the hole was about 6mm too big on either side.
