Electricity monitor, maybe for free?

I want to get an electricity energy monitor so I can keep an eye on power usage and kit on standby etc. Any recommendations? Any freebies going? I know a few years ago the major energy suppliers where giving them away for some customers as part of their 'green' commitments.
