Wanting to buy a house from the rental market

I've seen a house just go on the 'to let' market that I've admired for some time, would it be crazy to enquire if the owner would consider selling? Is it even the done thing?

If the house is on the rental market for £850 unfurnished, any idea what the value would be?

£250k? Wow, didn't think it would be that much.... It's in Scotland btw
