Hopefully going to have a garden of approx quarter of an acre shortly, so require a sit on mower.

Formerly most of it was a field, so it's a bit rough & ready in places, given where it is it won't ever be a perfect manicured suburban lawn. I'm looking for recommendations on what I should get, as in many respects I think something more akin to a mini tractor may be more suited as possibly a regular mower would simply shave off the grass etc where there are lumps & bumps.

Initial thoughts are Honda for build quality & reliability, any suggestions please?

Cheers

Thanks fellas. I didn't even realise John Deere did them, assumed tractors only!

Sit on definitely required, it's not an easy plot or particularly flat & like everyone these days I'm time poor!

Cheers, kind of what I suspected, I think if I remember correctly they're from £3k

Thanks for all the replies.

Despite my comment that I 'need' a sit on I think it's sensible to get in there first, and see what's what. I have some experience with sit ons and as many have said they do mean you still have to get out a smaller mower and or strimmer, in particular where the decks between the wheels.

Cheers for all the feedback, likewise any recommendation for powered decent size ones you stand behind would be appreciated.

Interesting thread but I think I can offer one piece of advice that's not been touched on. I have about 1/3 acre and originally cut it with a self propelled Honda. It was a great machine and did the job perfectly. The thing is, after the first cut's novelty I didn't ever enjoy mowing the lawn. I'd rush it for when people were coming over and I'd allow the lawn to go a day or two past when it should be cut. Now I've got a 15 hp Honda ride on, it's total overkil, even for such a small area an 8hp mower would be too much. However now I enjoy mowing the lawn, I open a beer and relax after work I look forward to it and the lawns never too long. If you want one, just get one!
You make an interesting comment! I have some experience of sit ons having used one in the past for years, whilst between mowers we had to hire one which was a petrol standard one and I don't recall it being an easy option!

What Honda have you got?

Appreciate the input fellas. Once I'm in and I've got to understand the plot in more depth I'll make a decision. I think the current owners take a mini tractor in there and have made it easier to do so. Depends what I want to do with it, if I'm going to put in more beds/expand them then it could make things trickier.

Having had a good look it's clearly more like a third of an acre, probably more, dam estate agents!

I'm under no illusion about it being more fun on a ride on, spent years with them previously so I'll treat it as a tool. Cheers

As an interim measure a mate has offered to lend me his petrol driven regular mower, think this will tell me all I need to know in the interim!

Honda ride ons look a pretty good bet at the mo.

Cheers
