Suppose I had an outdoor unheated pool in my back garden that was installed by a previous owner, let's say it was about 10 m x 5 m and assume 1.2 m sloping to 1.8 m depth.

If I decided I wanted rid of it and the garden laid to lawn, what's it going to cost?

I'll assume concrete liner with tiled finish, some decorative edging stones around the perimeter, single set of steps cast into the shell and some pipework and gubbins in a small outhouse by the main house.

I presume most of the cost will be the labour to break up the concrete and remove from site.

If I were to try to minimize costs by DIY, what tool do I need to hire to start wrecking?

Cheers for the replies, mainly useful suggestions. I'm particularly keen on the ball pool and patio

Guess the answer on cost is 'how long is a piece of string', depends what we do with it.

Keeping it is one option but it takes up most of what would be a nice lawn, and with 2 kids (3 and infant) we think that (I) its a liability - yes we can put a fence up but the eldest is remarkably adept at climbing - takes after me - and (ii) on balance we'll get more use from a lawn than a pool. If we wanted a patch of rough grass and a patio garden, we'd just buy something in London and be done with it. Keeping it will cost £10k as we're going to want (mrs is going to want) a child-resistant cover for peace of mind.

Child proof covers are about the same price so it looks like my first estimates of 10k whatever we do are pretty accurate. Cheers Jensen man!

Well

We got it

I now have a pool problem to deal with!

If we delete the plan will be underground rainwater storage (house is water metered and we like our garden + car washing) and probably a ground source heat collector array in readiness for future underfloor heating.

I'll probably attempt it myself after due research, it must be easy enough to hire some concrete smashing equipment and pour on the topsoil for under £10k ...

Purchase has just fallen apart because the sellers are refusing to move out, so we're into year 3 of the house hunt, which will also involve a high stakes gamble on what schools we get allocated or involve moving our eldest mid year. We're out of pocket by 4 figures, probably 5 if interest rates go up. A little bit furious.
