My energy supplier, Scottish Power, has invited me to have a smart meter fitted. Most of the comments I've read on PH (the search facility worked!) are around a year old so has anything changed in the last twelve months? I understand that the early smart meters may lose their 'smart' features if supplier is changed. Are current versions different or should I wait or not have one at all?

User experiences welcome, especially from anyone who has changed supplier - thanks.

After weighing up the pros and cons we phoned to arrange installation today, our smart meter will be fitted on Thursday morning. We're often in during the day so can use appliances whenever electricity is cheapest, day or night so half-hour tariffs won't be a problem, neither will losing the smart facility if we change energy providers and the meter is incompatible.

That (our smart meter installation) was a bit of a farce. Chap turns up at front door and says, "Our meters won't fit in there..." pointing to ground level gas meter box at front of house so we have a smart electricty meter and still our old 'dumb' gas meter. He'll report back to Scottish Power who will get in touch - ain't new technology wonderful...?

Another fail - the indoor display has stopped showing any information and appears to have lost its connection to the meter which is all of 15' away through one wall. I hope someone brave is on the end of Scottish Power's phone, my O/H is about to phone and she takes no prisoners.

As a result of having one installed for electricity we've bought a clothes drying rack. Our tumble dryer is now used far less than previously, probably for 10% of the time we used it for before.

Amazing! It's put £6 per year on every energy bill (every year) in the U.K. for you to discover that using your tumble drier less is cheaper .... thanks for that rolleyes

But hey ho it was "free" and obviously you needed a new one wink
Beats me how I could tell whether it was hot or cold outside without a thermometer.
