Driveway lights. Where to put wiring

Ive had my drive dug out and compacted hardcore layed. I will soon be laying block pavings on I think about 30mm of sharp sand. If I wanted lighting in various places can I lay the cables in the sand. Or should it be dug into the hardcore.
Also any recommendations of where to order lights.

Really, interesting. I have only ever found solar outdoor lighting to be little more than useless and poor quality. But I've only ever really seen the cheap b&q type stuff. If the latest stuff is up to it it would make life so much easier.
