When we bought our house 6+yrs ago the previous owner left the cheap BEKO washing machine and we've used it ever since with zero issues until last weekend when it snuffed it. No idea on its age.

I had my arm twisted by my parents and forked out nearly £500 for an 8kg Bosch. Their Bosch washing machine is circa 20yrs old and still like new. It turned up on Saturday. Basically it's too trick for its own good. Cycles take forever, it beeps all the time and its got a thing to prevent it spinning an unbalanced load (which is basically every time you do bedding or towels).

Took me hours to spin a load of bedding today that essentially meant me doing one sheet at a time and forming into a donut around the perimeter of the drum. IE not fit for purpose - I'm not sure if it's faulty or just over sensitive by design. I've called up the retailer and they've offered collection and an exchange/refund on price difference on an other machine.

I want something that's basic, sub £500 and just works. Depth is a bit of a concern as we have a 50mm waste pipe at the back so really 580mm depth is probably the limit. I don't want smart tech blah blah.

In an ideal world I'd have 3x sequential mechanical timers. One for soak, one for wash, one for spin. With two dials to set temp and spin speed. Why they've all gone to touch screen, billions of sensors, wifi etc is bonkers.

Why are there so many to choose from?!

This was the machine we bought. Seems very fussy.

I thought it was a relatively basic "good" one, but even that's "too smart".

Thanks for the input all. Looks like I'll be looking for another BEKO...

Crikey.

The biggest thing I'm learning is that they don't make em like they used to!

As always there's contrasting opinions. Having bought one "supposedly excellent" Bosch and it being a waste of time I don't fancy hedging my bets on another.

The MIL says "buy Hotpoint". Hers is 20+ yrs old. That's great, but they won't be the same as they used to be. My parents said the same about Bosch.

"New BEKO ones are rubbish"

Buy cheap, buy expensive, German are best. Some for Samsung, some not. It's a minefield.

Basically it's a "suck it and see" scenario by the look of it

I have a Which subscription and their best buy budget machine is : Bosch WAJ28008GB £369 (approx)

Also a Best Buy and with a larger drum, for £449 is : Zanussi ZWF942E3PW
Thanks for that. Don't suppose they gave any details on how noisy they are in use did they?

How is the SLK55 doing? Still miss mine. The Yaris GRMN is great but doesn't make as good a noise...
Just plugged that Bosch PN into Google.... Literally the first review on JL...

Well.... Apparently that's "a feature" sir...

Current machine is a Miele, it's been going strong for 13 years now without one issue whatsoever. It weighs a tonne though........
I've found what looks to be a NOS Miele washing machine from probably about the same time period. Possibly 10yrs old. New ones are too deep to go in the space because of a 50mm sink drain but the older one would fit.

Its strong money though for an old machine, but it is unused. I am tempted. Looks simple enough before they all got too complex. It's also a smidge over 100kgs!

Update from me.

Argos came and collected the Bosch today and issued a refund.

Last night I went with a pal to collect the NOS Miele that was for sale locally. Turns out it was in a display kitchen of a showroom and then put into storage, hence new but old.

It's a smidge over 100kg and built like a bank vault. Spins at 1600 and it nearly silent. From what I can make out the model came out in about 2007 but can't find when it was made until. It's model number is W3922.

The longest was cycle is less than 2hrs.

So far very happy. Yes, it did cost more than a BN Bosch (500 Vs 430), but I'm very pleased so far as it just works.

Best ones from my research in Currys with a tape measure...

Best drum to depth ratio is Candy/Hoover - these are all made by Candy (I think in Italy).

Next best drum to depth ratio was BEKO.

After that it's all much of a muchness.

Hotpoint/Indesit are the same.

I've read lots of reviews of the EBAC.

Lots of people saying the warranty is excellent and they've been out to repair and fix any problems, excellent service etc... Trouble is, that looks like rather a lot!

I have no direct experience, but it feels like it may be similar to a JLR product. Fantastic when working, excellent service, but needs lots of warranty!

If there's so many warranty claims, don't get market traction etc, you've got to even wonder if they'll be around in 7yrs!
