SO here is the deal - looking for a dog, mid sized or bigger, no Staffs etc. Older dogs are fine as I figure puppies find homes easily. Had dogs before so no big deal. Prefer a bh ideally. Dog will be alone up to 5 hours a day a couple of days a week in theory but may well end up either spending the days at my next door neighbours with their Lab or in their or my decent sized back garden, especially if the dogs get on well. Between me and neighbours there is plenty of space and plenty of people around.

Mainly just thought it would be nice to give a hound a home with a decent sized back garden and lots of dog loving mates so it can come a lot of places with me.

I live in North London. If anyone stumbles across one that fits the bill, do let me know. I'll check out rescue homes etc of course but thought that it might be worth asking here.

Oh, and dog size of medium and up is pretty fixed - if the bugger yaps or could fit in a handbag I am extremely unlikely to love it!!!!

Note to self, don't post and then leave ones laptop charger at work, and since when are even cheap spare chargers £40-£50?!

Anyway.... had a greyhond as a kid and always rather liked them. Going to the local dogs home over the next week, I'll also look at RSPCA and the greyhound place but regarding the greyhound, are they really ok by themselves? Just logic would say they should generally be very energetic as they are used for racing or is that not the case?

No not at all energetic, they will honestly sleep 22 hours a day, ours goes out for 2x15min walks a day and thats about it biggrin

we leave ours for about 6 hours or so on his own, he would probably be ok for longer but we dont like to leave him too long
Interesting. Ours was a Greyhound cross of some sort but was a family dog and I was pretty young so don't really remember. Lovely dog though. OK, greyhounds are officially on the list!

Update for you - may have found a lab / German Shep X breed that could be just right for me. She is 9, gorgeous and on good health but has been at the home for 2 years with a 2 day break when she was rehomed. Problem is she is very nervous around new people so they have struggled to find her a home but for reasons I don't understand, nervous animals seem to like me and my now ex cat was apparently terrified of everyone and everything before I got her and took less than two weeks of TLC and winning her trust to get her to be a very confidant, outgoing little beast. Anyway, plan is to spend some time with her on Friday and see how she does.

If she is not the right mutt for me, fair enough, but 9, living at a kennels for two years and kind of a rubbish back story and being the total soft touch I am with dogs I figured it would be good to see if I can offer her a nice home to see out her years in, but we shall see....

Some great ideas here! Waiting to see one mutt on Friday but if that is not right for me then greyhounds, collies and bulldogs all look great too. I don't want to get one for next two weeks as work means I am out for extended periods next week and the following but the search is on for a hound. Need to find one that likes car trips though!

Keep the suggestions coming though please as the more I know, the better for me and more importantly, the better for any dog as it's happiness and welfare ate obviously the most important thing to consider.

Did someone say something?

Eddie!!! byebye

On an iPad just now. When I am next at a proper keyboard, I'll provide a proper reply (it'll be greyhound biased though).

Cheers,

We had a dog called Ted at our local RGT who had daft ears just like those lol
So cute! Had a greyhound cross as a family pet when I was a kid - a rescue dog my folks got just after my older sister was born. Not sure what the cross part was but she was a great dog. When I was ten, my olds gave me a black Lab for my birthday. Our old dog, who must have been around 15 then, promptly played Dog Mum to the new one and having a puppy around, rather than annoy her, seemed to give her a new lease of life. The puppy would befriend anything alive and at one stage the damn thing had a duck who followed her around all summer which was a little random but very funny. Ahh, I miss those two hounds. I'll stop waffling on now but this thread made me all nostalgic.

Oh, and Ali - HI!

OP, if you would like to meet some greyhounds, PM me. I have a good rehoming contact in Cambridge, which is at least the right side of London for you.
230, thanks chap. Let me see what happens with the mutt tomorrow but if that does not work out, Greyhounds are one of the breeds high on my list, although generally, I don't care so much about breeds as the personality but greyhounds do seem like they would suit me very well generally.

Got to be said, I didn't know there were so many dog lovers on PH being as I don't really check out the pet forum, but it seems to me really cool that so many here have give homes to rescued animals.

Keep the ideas, links, advice, photos etc coming :-)

Sitting in an office today, bored witless, thinking it would be so much more fun doing this with some dopey dog sleeping or being amusing / annoying here as well... anyone got one that I could borrow for a few hours this afternoon in north London?! :-P

Update time!

A rescue charity has asked me to foster a 8 year old Alsation bh. Most rubbish looking Alsation ever being as the poor thing is underweight and had some skin issues. Her owner passed away and I think could not really handle the dog well so not a case of wilful neglect. Dog is apparently a lovely thing but hates kennels and is extremely stressed but very good with people etc. She is due to come to mine for a days visit over the weekend and we can take it from there.

I have always loved Alsations and they are one of the breeds I wanted to own but the dog is more important to me than the breed so was not looking for any specific breed.

So excited and I'll keep you all posted of coure

I now know more! Skin problem is due to a flea allergy. She is clear of fleas now and being treated so they said they will bring me some lotion for it and she is fine with people putting it on. Should clear right up. Her coat is in rubbish condition because of that and also as she is mal-nourished.

If all goes well, the rescue home are going to bring her to Chez Pappa (ok, that just sounds so wrong!) over the weekend. I think they are going to hang out with the dog for a while and if the beastie and I get on then she will be staying. She is a foster so I if it all goes horribly wrong the rescue place move her somewhere else. Assuming all goes well, I guess she stays here until she is well and then they find someone to adopt her.

She is not in a terrible condition but Alsations are a very handsome dog and suffice to say, this one is possibly the least handsome dog I have seen in a very long time but she looks and sounds adorable. So fingers crossed please and hopefully the PH pound will soon have another, if probably only temporary, member!
