Hi,

My Westie is on cardisure tablets for bradycardia. The pills say they should be taken one hour before food for better absorption. However, one website I saw only says without food, no suggestion of eating afterwards.

The question I have is does my dog have to eat after the pill has been taken?

As they are meant to be taken 12 hours apart she'd be having a meal at 9pm in the evening if she had to eat an hour after. If I can ignore her eating afterwards then it becomes a much more easy regime for me and her.

Thanks.

Thanks Bex,

The issue is that, as a 16 year old stuck-in-her-ways fusspot, she now starts to get very "jittery" at around 5pm and seemingly desperate to eat (her bowl is emptied at a rate of knots smile).

So the current regime is Pill at around 7am, Breakfast at 8. Then lunch at around 12pm and then in the evening it's pill at 5pm and eat at 6. So that's 10 hours apart. Sometimes, because she's old and I work at home so can let her, she'll sleep until 8-8:30 so she may not eat until 9:30-10 but she will still get jittery for food around 5pm.

I thought if I separate the pill regime from the food completely in the evening I can feed her at 5 and give her the pill at around 8pm thus ensuring as close to 12 hours as possible.

Make sense?

Just to clarify, the reason she eats 3 meals (sometimes 4) is that she has a problem (which may be connected to the heart issues and Westie chest) that any large meal seems to cause very bad stomach pains where she cries and goes on a mental walkabout in the garden for an hour or longer until she either brings the food up or the pain wears off. So if she eats a few smaller meals this problem does not occur.

She's on more drugs than a certain Tour de France legend biggrin

I think you're doing ok with your current routine. You can probably get away with the 10 the gap just let your vet know that's the closest you can do.

The only meds I know that are vital with the timings are for epilepsy treatment and they can be given with food.

I would do the same as you are if I was in your situation and fit in with her needs re: her meals.
So just to clarify ... you'd keep what I am doing and NOT suggest I go for the late pill in the evening? Or would the late pill that's 3 hours after her evening pill also be OK?

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

Clarify keep the pill at 5pm and feed at 6pm. But do tell your vet this is what you are needing to do.
Understood. Many thanks and have a good evening.

Edited to say I've only just seen your comment about 3 hours not being adequate time to empty the stomach. All makes sense.
