Dog muzzle recommendation wanted please

Taken on a rescue boy who has had a bit of a bad start in life. (believed to be Mastiff X Sharpei and has been a bait dog, who was then starved, dumped from a car, covered in bites and fag burns with his microchip cut from the back of his neck)He's mostly recovered now and good as gold with us at home but it has left him a bit of an attitude problem towards other dogs and in certain trigger situations which means him having to wear a muzzle when out in public.
We've currently got a Baskerville Ultra, but we're having to keep him away from grass and fields with him wearing it as he grinds it into the deck and he keeps taking the skin off the top of his nose. Its an endless cycle at the moment of nearly recovering and then damage again. We've softened up the inside for him where it sits on his nose but he uses such force it still damages him. Not keen on the nylon ones and think a full muzzle is needed. Would leather be better or do you think the problem would persist? Any others to consider?
