This poor looking creature has started appearing in my garden. What could be wrong with it?

Here it's looking straight at the camera

Update :-

I've not seen any sign of the magpie or any birds in my back garden since Friday. Do birds keep quiet when it's so hot?

Magpie update.
He's just appeared again in the back garden. Sadly he wouldn't turn towards me. I have to keep well away from the window or he flies off.

I think it is distorting the other side of his head now. Looking quite puffy at the top of his head aswell frown
Yes a bit worrying, but I'm pleased to see it's still about.

It could just be the angle but the object that is protruding out looks a bit shorter now.
I've just looked at the other pix I took today and it's hard to tell, but you could be correct.
I'll see if I can catch him tomorrow
