We were on vacation in Spain, in the communal pool at 08:30. This little kitten strolled over and sat beneath one of the sunbeds. He kept his eye on us and when we left the pool he followed. We (I) tried to scoot him off with some water, and on returning to my wife and explaining he wouldn't be back, she helpfully pointed out the small black kitten that was following me totally unphased. Plan A had failed

We thought we would let him hang around till his owner turned up

Plan C nobody turned up so find a cat shelter, we were going home in 2 days but what a good way to spend vacation. After a few attempts find shelter, by this time we had fed the poor little bugger and in return he had sat on our laps, climbed up and done the eye contact thing ( hypnosis) and shared a few fleas. Oh well

Took him to the shelter, nice enough place, left him and donation. Informed that as friendly as he was, he probably wouldn't be adopted as he was black. ( we knew they wouldn't put him down, but we were putting him into potentially a life sentence) but he would be better off than roaming the streets where he would have no chance of a life

We went back, decided to sponsor him. Left him at the shelter. But by the time we had arrived back the phone call had been made, cat hotels found. The potential of ownership was getting unavoidable. Back to Belgium, visit cat hotel ( we aren't always home). Check out concerns about his quality of life and decided that it has to be better than a shelter.
4 weeks later a flight to Spain to pick up what turned out to be a poorly kitten.
Back to Belgium, get him to the vets, thought the worse, and thought about how unfair it would be after all he had been through if it was a serious illness.
Results from vet Ok, he just needs treatment for a couple of weeks.
We are so happy, he's a really affectionate and becoming more active each day as the medicines kick in

Well my better half thought we may as well call him what he looks like - Scruffy
His coat is a mix of short and long hair in no particular order. His feet look like he is wearing Yeti boots.
But he's very affectionate and attentive and loves people

What a difference 2 weeks makes, but he hasn't forgotten his Spanish roots so the siesta is something he seems rather good at.

Horrendous day yesterday, Scruffy seemed poorly at the end of last week so we went to the vets. She said it may be FIP, I can't believe it, he is the most affectionate and loving thing.
Life is so f'n unfair,
The tests results are this week, but he's a feisty little bugger so I'm hoping so much for news that it isn't FIP, I'm going to have a word with Bastet to look after him.

Keep your fingers and paws crossed for him

Just got the results from the vet, it is FIP.
How bloody unfair can life be, he doesn't deserve that. We are back at the vets this afternoon to see what can be done, she is pretty sure there is nothing to do but the wife and I have been scouring the Internet for anything that might give him a chance, interferon keeps popping up so we will see about what we can do with that once we speak to the vet but she has said it will only be matter of time
It's not over yet, but it's not looking good. In my heart I know that we will need to decide when to let him go, we have to do the right thing by him but this hurts so much, the little bugger has broken my heart.

The vet has said nothing will cure him, maybe give him a few more weeks with injections every 2 days and fluid removal when needed. The thought of doing that to our loving little kitten is beyond contemplation. We have tried to do the best by him from when he first adopted us and we cannot step back from doing what is best for him now no matter how much we want to keep him with us for as long as we can.
A weekend of scruffy cuddles will pass too quickly
