The Miniature Schnauzer thread, for owners and potential owners to share their thoughts on the breed.
Put your pictures up, lets see your Pepper and Salts, Whites, Blacks and Black and Silvers
May extend it to standard and Giant Schnauzers if enough interest
Miniature Schnauzers are great little dogs, they are none shedding and are great for people who have allergies due to having
hypoallergenic coats, they take a fair bit of grooming as a trade off but are lovely, intelligent and loving in return.
So, Lottie is my first Miniature Schnauzer, Black and Silver and she is just over 11 months old and a little darling
My reasons for choosing a Miniature Schnauzer:-
For me it was a small dog who didn't need the world but was enthusiastic and fun, great company and a good guard dog.
She seems to have forfilled that role quite well plus she keeps me on my toes!
First a few pictures of my little one
Welcome to day 1, the first day I went to see her sister (ooops). Lottie was one of 6, 4 boys, 2 girls, a mix of white, black, pepper and salt and
black and silver.
Only the 2 girls were left and someone was coming to see them on the Monday (this was Thursday that I called) and as there was no deposit from
the other people, Katie said come round, so arranged to pop round after doing the Remembrance Sunday Parade (hence the uniform).
On arrival I saw Lottie's mum and Katie brought both of the girls out whilst I sat on the floor, my first choice just looked at me and totally
ignored me but little Lottie comes bounding over and here starts our story
After a while she was worn out, all that stroking and tickling did her in
Well that was it, I had been chosen! She was just over 4 weeks old in these pictures
After a 4 week wait she could come to her forever home
Food was the first thing she wanted, well after a sleep of course
I think I over did the toys but my girl was worth it.
Here she is with George the Giraffe number 1 (she is on number 5 now having killed the other 4!!!)
And with Sid the snake.
Of course its all hard work and with that.....
She actually settled down very well, think it must have been all of 5 minutes before she was at home.
The evening, ok I may have over done it but the last pup we had was Lucky and she was already house trained and living in a bungalow, Lottie was in a house so
I stayed downstairs for the first few nights, she slept soundly for most of it, maybe because I was there but we have a great bond
Moving on a little, due to the poor weather we had (lots of floods in the December/January and heavy rain from November onwards), toilet training was slow going.
Neither of us wanted to get too wet and the yard before the back garden was the best place for little Lottie (the garden was a quagmire tbh), it sort of
put her off the house training a little, even putting her outside every hour or two, it was cold and wet and even a little pup can't stay out too long
This meant house training took far longer than expected.... doh!!
Of course she could find all the best places to curl up, the second she could get up on to the couch she was there!
And adopting the position.
One thing you will notice about Miniature Schnauzer pups is they just like to sit down and look sooooo cute
It doesn't matter where she sits
Now onto those toys of her's.
She loves these squeaky ones, killed 2 of these ducks so far or is it 3?!!!
Oh and lets sit down again!
Moving right up to the last couple of weeks, and a little walk out on the moors.
Note all the grass in her coat, it took 2 days to get most of it out
Lottie and my Nephew.
Oh she did find an old victorian semi drain and went down there, thought i'd lost the little sod then
Luckily a couple of days after that walk it was hair cut day
Note the stolen hanky in the background, takes those out of your pocket!
Thats Lottie's story so far without going too indepth, I did start her off lead just after her first season, so at around 5 months old, she was very good and stuck
close to me, did it in an area away from people and other dogs/wildlife, after that I had no problems letting her off Mini's love to run around

He's seriously cute
At about 16 weeks try to get him into a proper groomer who knows how to cut Schnauzers hair, he won't need anything spectacular to start with, just a trim to keep his coat manageable, shouldn't be that expensive either, think Lottie's first cut was £10 or £15, up to £25 now as she is fully grown (plus it gets him use to it )

With dogs like Schnauzers, and airedales, welsh/irish terriers, lakelands, wire-haired fox terriers etc., I've often wondered if there's any purpose to them having their coats groomed in such a way as to give them a little goatee and massive eyebrows?

We used to have a brilliant dog when I was young, a Lakeland called Ted. When he came back from the trimming "salon" the first thing we always did was trim his eyebrows back so he could see properly (he used to run into the doorframes when his eyebrows were long!), and trim his goatee a bit so it didn't get dirty really quickly.

Its a bit of both I think, some looks and then short as their coats are pretty fine and knot up very easily so keeping them short is good It's particularly exaggerated in Schnauzers, but I've never known why it's done.

though saying that, Lottie sleeps on my bed and if she is cold she crawls under the covers lol.Well I have an addition to the Miniature Schnauzer family, little Max has joined his big sister Lottie (well half sister to be precise ) and its oh so much fun for him, just not for poor Lottie lol.
So Max is 11 weeks old now, can sit and lie down to command
but that is only because I learnt that taking Lottie to puppy training classes
She is a little more sedate, it was a touch and go thing about getting little Max as Lottie really isn't a dog type dog, she usually keeps out of the way of other dogs so my bright idea was to get her a brother to keep her occupied, its sort of working and she is more friendly towards other dogs, if a little cautious, but Max being a puppy is quite boisterous and that is one thing Lottie doesn't like lol, so she keeps up high and keeps him in check as much as she can, he will grow out of it soon (hopefully) but he is more confident overall and copies what she does to a certain extent.
If I come in then I'm normally greeted by Lottie and she gets lots of hugs, Max now goes to the door and Lottie gets to be on the chair, she gives out more hugs and kisses than Max but hes young and he is learning, its trying to give them both the same amount of hugs as each other which is difficult and keeping Lottie as top dog (which means she gets hugs first, food first etc so Max understands there is a pecking order but not to over do it as to make Max feel not wanted), so the balance of having 2 dogs (which is new to me) is very fine, about 5 seconds difference between hugging Lottie on entering the house and Max and then hugging both together.
But this is no good without pictures!!
We have Little Max looking cute, then Max sleeping funny, then Lottie and Max playing tug o war (that took some doing!) and then Lottie looking after her tired brother
