Hi all , it's been 7 years since our last bulldog passed away. We have had no other pets since. We bought a beautiful bulldog puppy on Monday but since bringing him home we are suffering. My throat swells after making a fuss of him and my wife and daughter have been suffering allergic symptoms. It's all rather uncomfortable and very worrying. We are already smitten with the little guy and really do not want to return home to the breeders. I have never had a reaction to a dog before this and neither has my wife . Any good advice you can offer, we have bathed him twice in 4 days , we have no carpets (tiled floors throughout). I am really concerned.

I dont really want to be taking antihistamines , I don't understand how we can all have become allergic at the same time when we never had issues beforemail with any previous dogs.

We bought some shampoo from Pets at home which they say might help so I have given him yet another bath in that. They don't sell Petal cleanse unfortunately, anyone know where I can source some to give it a try ? He is about the 18 weeks old so should hopefully be ok with it. I don't mind using antihistamines short term I just don't want it to be a daily thing .

It's not fleas or such , he has come from a very well respected bulldog breeder and is in great condition. He doesn't scratch himself and gives no indication of any kind of illness.

Started taking antihistamines yesterday , will try them for a few days and see how it goes. My eyes are pretty swollen and sore this morning.

The wife today has swollen lips with sores, swollen eyes and puffy face and blood coming from her nose when she blows it. She's taking antihistamines, how severe a reaction is this normal or extreme. I spoke to the breeder he suggested seeing a doctor I think I know what a doctor is going to say...we are gutted. Any vets here who may be able to offer some advice?

I dont think it's down to his food, my daughter has a history of pet allergies but my wife and I have never had a problem until now. I tried to contact the breeder but he was not available today as it's his day off. We don't want to send him back , but will if there's no alternative.

Day 9 now and we aren't improving, antihistamines are having little to no effect on either of us. Gutted.

I got hold of the breeder today and they agreed to take the dog back less £400 of the purchase price a week ago.
Wife went to see a doctor and I feeling guilty randomly took the puppy to the nearest vet I could find, I figured even if he was going back I wanted him to see a professional before being returned. The vet seems to think it's a parasitical skin infection of some kind and has prescribed 2 different treatments which they say should cure the problems we have had....Wether I will live to regret it or not I didn't take him back to the breeders. The doctor gave my wife some stronger antihistamines which can be taken up to 6 times a day. I felt so guilty about taking him back I just didn't have the heart to do it regardless, love eh. He's so darn cute and I am so darn soft.

Nice one thanks for sharing your experience, we don't allow him to link us although he did does like to give kisses. Started his 1st treatment last night and have to wait 4 days before the secondary treatment can start...this is basically a medicated shampoo not available off the shelf.

He was fed on tripe by the breeder...soon changed that to minced beef and fresh chicken...tripe farts are the pits.

The initial treatment the vet gave him is called Advocate, he hasn't been himself today very lethargic and off his food. Would anyone know if this is normal ?

He ate breakfast fine , but only picked at his dinner and finally managed to finish it at teatime , therefore didn't have his teatime meal . He is still very lethargic this evening. It was applied last night around 10pm.

He's back to normal this morning, he did have a 15mins playtime with 2 French bulldogs yesterday maybe they tired him more than I realised. He doesn't have great stamina yet I don't think.

Things definitely seem to be improving, still getting some symptoms but not as bad as they were so hopefully another few weeks and we can get back to normality.
On another note we were thinking about insuring the little fella. We had a quote off the kennel club, my God what a joke they are to insure our puppy they wanted more than I pay to insure my car, van , motorhome and house combined and that included my introductory offer.

After a day or 2 thinking things were improving we are both suffering again. The dog is spotless and so is the house, have ordered some Petal cleanse as nothing the vet supplied seems to be doing the trick.Starting to wear us down now and thinking Petal cleanse is our last resort before having to think about rehoming him.
