Last minute Oktoberfest trip - help!

It crept up on me and I didn't notice.
And so, my attempts at arranging a trip to Oktoberfest for the weekend of 28th September are proving to return rather expensive results.
If anyone has any suggestions of how to (economically) head out on Friday and return on the Sunday I'd be all ears.
My current thinking is to fly to somewhere circa 3 hours away, and pick up a hire car. Don't mind spending the Friday night not in Munich, and then head in on the Saturday morning - try to catch a Bayern Munich game, then on to the city centre for some beers. Would need somewhere to crash that night, and then drive back, drop off the hire car and fly home on the Sunday.
Any bright ideas chaps?
