A day out in Virginia

SWMBO and I are off to the US in the last week of June!

We're spending 3 days in the Washington DC area. One day will be seeing the monuments etc in DC, one day visiting a friend in Woodbridge.

This leaves us one day to get out and see a different part of Virginia. Must be drivable there and back in a day from DC. We're looking for somewhere with good scenery, a bit historic and a bit less touristy.

I've heard Richmond or Williamsburg are nice, are they do-able in a day? What are the other options?

Thanks all for the replies! It sounds like a plan to Shenandoah is on the cards. It does look like a fantastic place. That road is making me want to invest in some better hired transport...
