Will be spending 3 or 4 nights in NY in September on the way back from visiting my brother in Bermuda.

SWMBO fancies the Waldorf Astoria, can anyone else suggest a better alternative?

I'm not opposed to it just looking at other options before she goes ahead and books it.

She has been to NY before, I haven't, we tend to book most of our Hotels based on either recommendations and/or TripAdvisor reviews.

Living in Dubai we are exposed to big glitzy chain hotels on a weekly basis so any left field boutique ideas welcomed.

For that type of hotel how about the Essex House, part of the Jemeriah chain so well known to you in Dubai. It's right on central park, only had a drink in there before but seems very nice.
Think the missus stayed there last time, tbh want to avoid a chain I am surrounded by, even though it is not a Jumeirah property anymore.

Thanks again for suggestions, she'll need to go through them all now!

We also now need to decide how long we are spending there, as it stands we plan to arrive on Sep 11th, can't decide whether that's a good idea or not..

Just to put this to rest, we choose the Gansevoort in Meatpacking in the end, actually arrive in NY back from Bermuda on the 12th rather than the 11th, 3 nights then back to Dubai.

Thanks for all the suggestions, will give my thoughts on the hotel in about 6 weeks, a friend has also stayed there and reckons we will love it.

Can recommend some great restaurants- All need advance booking.

Aquavit - think of it as a Scandinavian Fat Duck.
Pampano- simply superb south american seafood.
Spice Market- near meat packing district. Great food and cocktails.
Danji - Korean food.
Awesome, thanks.
