San Francisco accomodation

Spending a few nights in San Fran in August. My friend and his wife and I don't want to go all out on hotel costs, so would like any recommendations for decent budget places to stay for a few nights that are close to the best attractions.

We will have a rental car for the entire trip so a few miles isn't an issue.
