Route 66 - talk to me

My fiancé and I are planning a 3 week trip down Route 66 in May 2015 for our honeymoon.

Looking to fly into Chicago and travel east to west over three weeks and checkout as much as we can.

Obviously there are lots of standard touristy things to do and see but I wondered if anyone has any alternative ideas?

I'm into my shooting and want to stop at a range or two and waste as many dollars as humanly possible so I guess we should also plan some retail therapy for the then to be Mrs Tack.

We will be spending a couple of days in St Louis with friends but the rest of the time is free.

I was thinking a mustang or challenger but vehicular options are open to suggestions.

Anyone done the whole route and have any suggestions or advice? I'm open to suggestions.
