WTF - Clapping when the plane lands.

Maybe I haven't noticed because I charter the private jet to my corner shop in Monaco for my champagne and milk, but I've been on a few Ryanair flights lately, and everyone claps when the plane lands - what the hell is going on? Why would you even do this? Are people in awe of the pilot doing their job!?

If you are a clapper yourself? What's your motivation? After all, I bet you don't clap when the bus or taxi driver drops you home. Must be a class thing

I should note that these have been completely normal flights, with no issues or incidents.
