Mobile data in the USA?

Got a friend who is off to the US in a couple of days and is asking about mobile data for their iPhone. What's the best option at the moment?

I've just advised going to a tmobile store to get a sim, or looking in walmart (or similar!) for one. Seems that's still a good option.
