Croatia - where to go, what to see etc

The other half has talked me into going to Croatia on our summer holiday next year, somewhere I've never really considered before or known much about. Completely different to my list of potential holidays; Snowboarding, New York, Ibiza and Iceland, but I'm all for trying things.

Looks like we'll be going for 10 days, starting in Split, ending in Dubrovnik, with no plans as yet on what happens or where we stay in between.

So, any recommendations?

Not fussed about staying in luxury, more about doing and seeing things, although would be nice to have a few days to chill out somewhere. Also have no idea about how long to stay in each place.

As for the OH knowing where she wants to go - she doesn't . She's been told by a friend then looked at pics and decided its the place to go. They gave details on where they went but I like to look and plan (or ask internet people) myself as well.

I know this is a bit "brits abroad" but is much English used there? Don't mind learning a bit of language just want to know how much really and if it's easy to work it out when there.
