Little get away in the UK

I'm back from Australia for a wedding in August, and will have 3-4 spare days. Current plan is to take a little road trip somewhere not TOO far a drive from London (so can probably exclude Scotland, Yorkshire etc a possibility though).

Ideally after old country pubs, some nice walking, quaint little villages, etc.. Anybody have any ideas?
