The last time I went to New York I bought an AT&T pay as you go sim and paid about $30 and got about 500gb of data but that was a few years ago and it's all different now.

I don't have a personal mobile plan anymore as work give me a sim to use but I think if I go to America and hammer the data I'm going to have a bit of an issue!

I'm there for a week and I'll probably use no more than 1.5gb. I have my own iPhone 6 that I bought direct from Apple so it's unlocked. I'm not really bothered by making calls or sending texts.

Options I've found are AT&T $60 pay as you go sim. 4GB of 4G but by the time I've bought a sim card I'm looking at the best part of £50. Alternatively Three have Feel at home so I could just get a pay as you go sim and use this but it doesn't guarantee a speed, I don't really want to be stuck on GPRS. Their website isn't very clear on how much credit I will need to use this either.

Has anyone been out the USA recently and can offer any advice?

Good call on T Mobile, they do a $3 monthly pay as you go with $10 weekly charge for 1gb of 4g.

Thanks everyone, sounds like three is the winner. I'll call in a store and get a sim.

Fantastic, my girlfriend wants to speak to someone in a shop just to make sure we can use it (I'm sure we can) but I'll wait until she's done that until I put an order in.

A bit of an update now I have returned. I ended up buying the £15 Three sim from a store and it worked straight off in my phone.

It's great coming home knowing that I won't have a large bill coming my way and calling and texts to home worked flawlessly. I spoke to my dad from the 100th floor of the world trade centre as clear as anything.

Data could be a bit patchy though, I never got a 4g signal whist I was there and sometimes I couldn't get a 3g signal or it would say I had and then refuse to load the pages. Overall I would recommend getting one from a price point of view but if you are looking for high speed mobile data it's probably better to go for a local sim.

I too struggled with google maps but the apple ones were fine.

My phone would alternate between T-Mobile and AT&T.
