Early in October my wife and I will be staying overnight for one night in Naples, Italy, prior to flying back to the UK the next day. We will have about 6-8 hours of free time so we would like to do some sightseeing. We like culture, art, buildings, gardens, street life etc. Our hotel is close to Naples Central Station.

Do any PHers have any recommendations for what we could do that day? We went to Pompeii and Herculaneum several years ago, so they can be ignored.

We could take one or more of the sightseeing open topped bus routes to get an initial feel for Naples, but I think we'd prefer either to have a short guided tour of part of the city or just have a small list of recommended places to walk to see etc.

Note that we have travelled through Naples Airport many times before on our way to other parts of Italy but never stayed in or visited Naples at all.

Although we've used the airport maybe 6-8 times we've always travelled on elsewhere the same day. On this upcoming trip the timings are such that we get back to Naples from Sicily mid evening and our flight is also mid evening the next day, so a day in Naples is unavoidable. We don't want to spend all day in the hotel or at the airport!

Thanks for the advice etc so far.

We do realise that Naples is not the most spectacular place in Italy. It's also something of a place for the criminal element. As regards suitcases, we will be able to leave these at the hotel while we spend a few hours in the town, then go back and head for the airport. Maybe we'll just go to the best shopping area and cruise around there and have lunch etc. although this sounds a wasted opportunity.

We have been to Sorrento for a week, and also Ravello for a week on three occasions, so we know and love the Amalfi Coast area well.. we've done all the local historical sites etc.

Here's an update as we're back from our trip to Italy/Sicily.

Once again, our time in Naples confirmed it is a dump. Worse still, before we left home on the morning of the day we flew to Naples our hotel called to say they did not have a room for us, even though we booked it 6 months beforehand. They put us in a what was not much better than a doss house a km away. Not happy..but what could we do? We had also booked the same hotel on our way home and this time we got a junior suite which was pretty crap really. We will not be staying in Naples again.

On the day of our flight home we opted to be at the airport hours ahead of flight time rather than be wandering around Naples.

As for the rest of the holiday, it was excellent as expected.
