Thought I might punt this in - due to the fact lots of people do think skiing is s hugely expensive holiday and simply cannot justify it. Well there are options which offer ski holidays at 25% of the cost which suddenly opens the door to new to skiing customers / or those who woulld love to go more often but even bi annually is a push.
I've never tried a top end resort as yet and I will at some point & accept what will be a high cost (we can only go Feb half term). As such it's impossible for me to qualify is one resort 4x better and not just subjective but enough for you to put your hand in pocket.
A friend who is Polish grew up in a little place in South Western Poland a couple of miles away from a ski resort. The Google Earth pics and then actual piste runs etc it looks great and it's super cheap, she stated when she grew up it was nearly all Polish who went there but roll on 25 years and little has changed. She isn't a skier or boarder so cannot comment on what its like to ski there. The village is strictly traditional style too so lots of pluses.
Does anyone go to Andora anymore?

everyone else is enjoying the nice sunny weather outside, so only felt right to get next years ski holiday booked up.
Off to courchevel 1650 again with Le Ski in january. was really happy with their service and booking up early got me free 3 valley lift passes. all in all pretty decent deal!

nope, just me and the GF and to be fair costs not working out that bad (ok its not cheap, but skiing isnt exactly a budget holiday), also my GF is kinda dragged along so go somewhere nicer with her than if i was going with the boys!catered chalet (outdoor hot tub), flights (from manchester £35 supplement), transfers, ski carriage (£35 supplement), full 3 valleys lift pass, plus 5% discount for booking a second holiday with them (used them last year), total cost is £1,770.20 for 2 of us.

Regarding boots, we found the local hire place took their time to give you the right boots, and now have all our measurements on file. They still insist on a full fitting though. That allows for small adjustment from one year to the next, but the boots we've had have always done us well even on longer breaks. Each year we've skied on new skis, so I find it hard to understand why anyone would buy outright when a couple of years down the line you end up skiing on old equipment.
out of interest how long do you spend each trip queuing then getting fitted with your rental gear. You should have
Own boots
Own skis
Own helmet
Own ski poles.
These will last so long - plus on the skis front they can be sold second hand for pretty good prices meaning you can have rolling refreshed kit. Boots I've had mine 6 years they are superb stilll like new not going to be changing them plus they are a perfect fit. Hire boots have not Ben very good.

It's possible we've been very lucky with hire boots - really never had a problem despite being out for 10+ days. Helmets came cheap from Aldi(?) when they had a special offer a year or so back. Spent a bit more on goggles and jacket etc.
I hired for 3 seasons never again - first one was dire, second gave me bad pressure sores and the last smelt bad. I bought firstly a good set of Solomon but after a day using them on a dry slope I realised hey we're not right. Somehow I ended up in Decathalon and one of their special offers on boots were on I tried a pair and they were perfect and remain so - sold the Solomon's.
Skis I replicated the Decathalon deal so got a set of Head Skis for £199 (given my ability are fine). The amount of times I've used them so far has more than paid for themselves outright in hire.
Now a big fan of Decathalon I buy a new helmet every couple of years likewise gloves - I donate both to charity shops (if I knock the helmet it's binned).
I've no idea what I've done pre last year but ski grad states 24 degrees for 2016.
Last year was the first time I've used that app and I've certainly done bigger gradients but have no idea what they were or were not. But I was "holy st" whine I realised how steep one red run was but managed it slowly.
45/50/60 degrees looks utterly nuts and for professional skiers only

What's the steepest gradient you have skied?
58 degrees, apparently. It's a great early morning slope after warming up with a couple of blues first. I believe it's been used in a World Cup event in the past.Edited by vetrof on Monday 21st November 20:21
Insane.

I just watched a video to see it as it sounded very strange to be piste. Then it looked even stranger as it certainly didn't look anything like 58 degrees in the video so had a quick google. It's apparently in %, so actually around 30 degrees in the steep part.

never been to morzine myself, but things I'd recommend:
- lessons- group or private, make a huge difference. dont need to be full days, even a morning or afternoon and take the rest of the time to practise on your own or with the family can really get the most out of your time there. also helpful to get your bearings for getting round the mountain!
- kit- no need to go overboard buying the most expensive stuff in the nearest ski shop to you. have a look online (sportspursuits do great deals on last season stock!) or get yourself to tkmaxx or decathlon where you can get decent kit a a fraction of the price. i'd say make sure you have decent waterproof trousers and jacket (you can make these warmer by adding more layers/ thermals, but an absolute must- good gloves!!! nothing worse than spending all day with damp/soggy hands!
- dont do too much too soon- a weeks a long time to be skiing 8:30am-5:00pm for 6 days in a row! take it easy, enjoy it!
Kit as a total novice pop down Decathalon to kit out. Perfectly good stuff and not too much cash relative to the top end stuff. - lessons- group or private, make a huge difference. dont need to be full days, even a morning or afternoon and take the rest of the time to practise on your own or with the family can really get the most out of your time there. also helpful to get your bearings for getting round the mountain!

Once you wear it out and skills have improved then budget allowing you could upgrade the kit.
If your going skiing don't bother with Hire boots buy some here instead. I did have a £300 pair of Saloman boots but they really didn't work for me so I sold them and bought a set of Head boots on bkg discount at Decathalon £119 and used then for years and years now they fit perfectly for me I'll not be changing them anytime soon.
If you have never skied before which appears to be the case and you are going for 6 days on the slopes trust me you'll spend at least 1 or 2 days just learning how to stand up put boots on coming to a stop on a barely noticeable slope then progress to making a turn "pizza" style then combining corners all on the same slope.
Day 3 depending on your1-2-1 or the group level lessons you might go on to a gentle blue.
My point is you have time now here in the U.K. to get the utter basics learnt so that when you arrive your into the usual day 3 or 4. I really cannot recommend this enough.
Skiing holidays are not cheap so to spend most of the time barely on the mountain and not experiencing many runs views is a waste.

Question
I use the ski trax app which is great
But the info I'm after is
Average speed for a run
Average speed for the day and the nthe season.
I cannot find that instead it's purely max speed duration and time which clearly means average speed can be calculated but why doesn't ski trax just have that.
In a debate with a mate who likes going straight down reds! But looking at his total time skiing and speeds he is hitting there are so many bar breaks in the day and I mean near on at the end of each run... I kid you not so poor average speed and the balls of steel straight line red runs are possibly 8-10pints deep which is fking stupid / lethal.
DIY if Piste is empty it's your call your life but busy Piste 8-10pints in straight lining an entire red run is madness.

Itching to take the motorhome for a wee run to the snow....
I have some time early or late December think I'll just head out when the next big dump is due & some more of the resorts are open, freestyling it
How does that work in reality?I have some time early or late December think I'll just head out when the next big dump is due & some more of the resorts are open, freestyling it
I mean night time temps -15-25degrees while in a motor home doesn't seem to work that well

so hemel want 200 quid for 1 hour for a family private lesson!! is that normal? we are restricted to weekends only and wont have anyone to supervise our boys ie it looks like we all need to be in the same group at the same time
I'd say it's not bad at all. Think about it v holiday
1. You are doing this now to avoid being stuck on the nursary slope on the snow which is no fun
2. Lift pass
3. 1-2-1 tuition on holiday is a lot more

Heads up, Aldi has their skiwear available again.
I had a look at some of their 'ski tops' today going for £4.99.I'm usually a fan and got some of their merino stuff not long ago but this stuff was 'cheap'.
