1 day in San Francisco
Discussion
I'm lucky enough to be going on a business trip to San Francisco in May (Google IO 2016). I will have 1 day free in SF (the Saturday) and would like to try and see the best bits, so obviously need to know what those best bits are
I would like to get a good view of the Golden Gate bridge, but I'm not too bothered about crossing it. So apart from that, what is worth seeing there?

Like the look of the bus or fire engine tours
I was thinking about Alcatraz, but given how little time I have there I assumed that it would take too much of the day.
I will be transferring from my conference hotel into a hotel in the middle of the city on the Friday evening so I could probably do some site seeing then too.
Some nice food destinations too.

I need to change the thread title to 2 days in San Francisco as I've managed to rejig the travel arrangements a bit
The only downside is that I will have to take 2 red-eye flights on the way home as I need to stop off in Boston for a few days (work) on the way back.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I should be able to see more of the city at a slightly less hectic pace now.

And I'm back having really enjoyed the city thanks to the suggestions on here I spent most of the Saturday walking around the city and doing the boat cruise out into the bay. I managed to walk a total of 10 miles including the climb up to the Coit tower and Lombard Street - aching legs the next day
I didn't so the Alcatraz trip as it was fully booked, but I did get loads of great photos of the island from many different locations.
Sunday I did the big bus tour over the bridge and then took a shuttle bus down in to Sausalito where I managed to have a nice relaxing lunch in a bay front restaurant (The Trident). Relaxing was the order of the day on Sunday after so much walking the day before and the prospect of a red eye flight to Boston in the evening.
A great city and I'm glad I got to spend a decent amount of time there.
Thanks again for the invaluable suggestions.
