France car hire

Going over to France, we are hiring a car from one of the big hire companies. I now understand that because I no longer have the paper part of my driving licence I need a number so that the hire company can check if I have any endorsements on my licence??? Is this correct and if so where do I obtain said number??

Booking a car transporter the hire company have asked that I make sure I have the code number available. He did say that they can access the code on the day of hire but it saves time if I bring it along myself. This is in the UK.
