Rome/Italy in October

The OH has always wanted to go to Rome with me (she's been before). Due to schedules etc. October is looking good for a week's break.

Does anyone have any recommendations and advice?

Hotels, locations etc.

Either that or the Almafi coast, which I suspect will be much more expensive.

I know nothing about Italy aside from it's where my bikes were made!
