I worked for the police for many years and have a son who is currently in the job, so still have quite a lot of contacts. A few weeks back I was told a story which they promise is absolutely true.

Shortly after Christmas, two police officers are doing some enquiries at some flats and as it's simple work, they split up to visit two of the flats. One of the young coppers goes to the flat of an elderly lady who is very pleasant but a bit confused. However, she asks the officer to take his boots off and, not wishing to cause her any distress, he reluctantly does so, removing them outside the front door and putting them in her hallway. He spends a short time with her during which time she only leaves the room to go into the kitchen area and he can see her all the time.

When he goes to leave, he steps out into the hallway and says "Where are my shoes?".
She looks as puzzled as him, shakes her head and says, "Are you sure you didn't leave them outside?"

He's obviously adamant, pointing at exactly where he left them but all she keeps saying is "Maybe you left them outside?"

Eventually, he doesn't really know what to do and calls his colleague who arrives and the discussion continues in the same way. There's no sign of his shoes, the old lady seems confused but mystified and keeps saying the same thing. The officers ascertain that there is no-one else in the flat or who has access to the flat.

Finally, with little other option, the officers leave with the embarrassed young constable having to go back to the nick in his socks.

The next day, the same old lady makes a telephone call to the police station to say "I've found the police officers boots". He goes back to the flat and there, in the hall are his boots exactly as he left them, in that the laces are tucked in the same way he left them when he took them off, so clearly no-one else has put them on or worn them.

The old lady says she noticed them "by the dresser" when she got up that morning. The dresser is further down the hall.

A delighted officer got his shoes back but the 'mystery' is the talk of the nick!

Explanations required, please!! (Because the police officers themselves haven't solved it yet!)

There is an obvious answer - the whole story is a complete fabrication.
I'm assured not, although it does seem a reasonable assumption.

My own 'explanation' is that he possibly didn't shut the front door behind him and as he'd taken his shoes off outside the front door, some mischievous kids saw him and while he was in the living room with the old lady, the kids sneaked in and pinched his shoes.

Quite how they got the shoes back again, though ... hmm, not sure now!
