I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn't 1st April, why do we always take the rubbish from America like this and Proms and not the good stuff like customer service in restaurants. More fool the parents I say, all we had was a leavers assembly in church

We aren't living in Victorian Britain any more.
Nothing wrong with school proms, and if they want to have a special leavers day from nursery then why not - granted, it is a bit OTT, but meh.
We had “leavers’ discos” where we turned up in our Sunday best, not Proms with Limo’s and hired tuxes. At my sisters school the head was asked for permission to land a helicopter in the school fields.

Just another excuse for parents to spend money they haven’t got on an American tradition, really hope it all dies down by the time I have kids.

This and baby showers.

eughhhhhhhhhh
I’d forgotten about that one! Every baby shower the GF has been to means the baby doesn’t get a present when it’s born. Simple!

15 years ago I shouldn’t have bothered with going into Engineering straight from Uni, should have just sat and watched a load of episodes of Friends and the Simpsons and set up a company selling prom, baby shower, graduation stuff. I’d be a millionaire by now

Shall we arrange a celebration ceremony for you? You have just learned a new word.
If you insist, I’d quite like light blue gown and mortar board as it’ll match my eyes. Plus I want a scroll, balloons, and a congratulations cake. Then I want a rented tuxedo for the Prom party after along with a stretch Hummer, loads of jelly and ice-cream and all my friends and family to attend? I’m free Friday next week, looking forward to it!

You complain about American traditions coming over here, and then say "tuxes". Nice.
Yep, if I was going to a prom I might wear a tuxedo, if I was going to a ball I might wear a dinner suit
