Hi all.

I work in an HGV garage and I am thinking of reporting all the smoking members of staff for smoking in the work place.
There are a couple of reasons I am hesitant to do so - I am the 'new boy'. I've been there less than a year, and other members of staff are very much long-standing. And it'll be obvious who had blown the whistle.
Reasons I am wanting to report - it's fking disgusting and I am sick to death of breathing their smoke 6 days a week.
Despite omplaining on a daily basis (out loud to everyone. Including 2 levels of 'management') it never changes.
One lad has taken to smoking outside now, but I can see that stopping as the weather turns this autumn.
It gets to the point where I start wondering if by any good fortune all the smokers could lose control of their vehicles on the way to work and end up having to re-trade to an office job miles away from me. It's not the fking 30's anymore.
So does anyone have an experience of tackling these problems, and advice for me to do so?
Please hold the ''man up and get over it" comments from all the smokers. I can't be arsed with them.

Thanks in advance.

I would report them and see what happens, if nothing changes leave. You shouldn't have to passive smoke to do your job.
I've read up a little since creating this topic. Seemingly there's an 'up to £2500' for companies who knowingly allow it to happen. And a £50 fine to an individual caught smoking.

Okay. Softly softly does it. Stop complaining. Don't mention smoking for 8 to 10 weeks. Then phone local council, and report them as "a concerned customer"
I'll try 4 - 5 weeks, lol. I'll give that one a shot, thank you.

Why is it you want to report them? Are you in such close proximity to them that it's causing you issues?

Yep - I am. Perhaps now you know where I work you could visit and experience it yourself?
As soon as I am in at 7, it's all I can smell until I go home. There's one old gimp who constantly has a rollie hanging out of his mouth. And I spend more time at work than I do anywhere else.
I am quite physically active, and while my lungs are screaming out for oxygen after I've been for a run/swim/gym, I don't want them filled with that ste.
To those suggesting getting a different job - that doesn't solve the problem. Merely avoids it.
There are numerous reasons I am happy to keep working where I do, but mainly, I shouldn't HAVE to look for a new job.
This has been illegal for 7 years now.

Though I'd reckon the diesel exhaust would be the much bigger risk factor in a haulage garage, given cancer researches views on it.
At least that's an occupational hazard though. I've brought that on myself by not trying hard enough at school! Lol.
I haven't taken it any further today. The manager of the whole site has earache from me about it at least once a week, so if he is willing to turn a blind eye, I'll be pissing in the wind whatever happens.
I don't mind being perceived as 'the tt' as I don't particularly like everyone I meet anyway; so it's nothing new to me!

There was someone like the OP where I work who was a whinger. He found himself a new job because everyone hated him.
Maybe that's what OP should do instead of trying to bend everyone else to his will.
I don't winge for the sake of it, thank you. I've been all kinds of places, seen and done all kinds of things, all before I was 25.
I don't need to be patronised by some pleb online who hasn't a clue what he's talking about; merely making an assumption, and an ass of you.
I get on with the people I like, and want to get on with.
I have no inclination to "bend everyone to my will". I am merely sick to death of breathing in disgusting cigarette smoke whenver i walk around the workshop.

I can hazard a guess that most replying negatively are selfish smokers, and most replying positive are sick of said smokers.

I don't smoke and I assumed because from reading your previous replies on this thread you come across as a self important officious little prick. Why try changing something that's obviously gone on there forever just to suit you? Is working somewhere where everyone is ready to deck you what you really want? Maybe you enjoy punishment. I don't know, I'm just a pleb with no idea what I'm talking about.
You can't educate pork.
It's nothing to do with being self-important, it's just as simple as disgusting habit that I shouldn't have to suffer for 60 - 80 hours per week.
I'm out.
