Can someone explain to me the use of 'lol' at the end of one's own sentence? Is it meant as a demand to 'laugh out loud,' or someone simply pretending to laugh at their own half hearted attempt at a joke?

Please enlighten me.

It's used to infer humour in text rather than literally meaning Laugh Out Loud these days.

"You're a fking idiot" and "You're a fking idiot, lol" represent an offensive insult and a ribbing you give your mate for mucking something up.

It's the same as smilies / emoticons, they are a way of inferring an emotion into what you're saying.
Thanks for the serious reply. hehe This hasn't turned out quite as I thought. getmecoat

A mate of mine adds lol to the end of almost every line of every text. I could excuse it if he was a teen but he's forty fking one. Should know better!
This annoys me even further, once or twice is bad enough, but this is ridiculous. frown
