How do you avoid offending someone...

Ok,

I have a friend, they have two seriously ugly kids. I mean, I can never tell which one is male and which is female. I think the girl is the one that looks most like the dad.

They often coo and awww over their frankly horror inducing offspring. How can I politely talk about their kids without saying "f**k me they are ugly as hell"...

Don't get me wrong, I'm no oil painting, but in comparison to them I'm a catwalk model....

I know. And I feel quite guilty about it too, but when they are saying how cute/lovely the children look in this or that outfit what do I say? They are not close friends at least.

But seriously, what do you say to avoid such things? Just lie and say how lovely they look?
