I was walking home last night from the train station after a long day at work and decided to pop into Sainsbury's to buy some bread/milk etc. This is one of those Sainsbury's in the centre of town.

I got to the till and was stood behind this little scally, probably about 19, shaved head, black tracksuit, buying beer....you know the sort. He's also giving the young lad behind the counter a load of abuse. Anyway, he goes to leave the shop and I'm getting my stuff scanned through. Next thing I hear is this young thug shouting, "Eh mate...Eh mate...yeah you!"

I looked around and he's staring at me. "Me?"

"Yeah you, give us 60p so I can buy this fking paper"

"Err...no. I'm not giving you anything." I carried on putting my stuff in bags, paid and walked past him.

"Eh you....what the fk's your problem. Give me fking 60p or i'll knock you out outside".

Me - "seriously....??" and I laughed at him.
He then proceeded to follow me out of the shop and down the street all the while telling me he's going to "kick fk out of me"

Now, I don't really like violent situations. There's no good that can come of them and if I'd have lamped him I would no doubt have been caught on CCTV and locked up for the night. I also don't want to lose my job by getting involved in a fight in the street with some scally who clearly has nothing to lose. So I walked away and he lost interest. I was happy with the outcome albeit not happy that I'd been threatened by this little yob.

What annoys me is that scally's like that see threatening people as a way of life and get away with it because they know decent folk won't do anything about it. It really boils my piss!

Cool story bro and all that, I know.

Not that I'm a well built company director etc, etc but where does the law stand if you hit him first? He's following you telling you he's going to knock you out? Is there no defence to saying you genuinely felt your life was in danger? Not that I'm advocating it, it just seems very strange
I don't know - that's the thing. The problem lies in the fact that I wouldn't want to find out what would happen if I had just smacked him. There's a chance he could press charges and it could go through the courts. Even if you were found not guilty, would you want to risk that or would you bottle it and take a plea deal and end up with a record? It's a tough one.

Looking back at it, I know I handled it the right way but I have to admit I felt a bit ashamed by walking away and trying to ignore him.

That was my first thought - this one obviously made it past pre-school though.
