Do any supermarkets actually manage to deliver stuff with some sort of efficiency? I've been using Asda online for 9 months now and at least 1 in 3 deliveries go tits up. Yesterday I placed an order for delivery between 11am and 1pm today. Normally they send an email giving a more refined one hour delivery window within the 2 hour slot. Having not received any email I logged on to the website early this morning to find my order was marked as "already delivered". How the hell they managed that in the middle of the night is a mystery.

Phoned their useless South African call centre. Gave them the order number. Ok says the female minion. "I see you have an order placed for delivery between 11am and 1pm today".

"Yup".

"Can you please tell me when your order is meant to be delivered?"

"You've just told me that!!!!!"

"Sorry?"

"You've just told me when the bloody order is meant to be delivered and then immediately asked me the same damn thing."

Clearly the witless fool had moved on to a new computer screen and immediately forgotten what she'd just told me.

My chances of ever sorting this out are slim. I'll no doubt get charged on my credit card for a delivery that never arrived, spend hours on the phone with a succession of witless idiots and finally decide it's easier to kill myself than try and get Asda to sort it out.

Well yes the shopping did turn up. I got nowhere with the South African call centre as usual so I phoned the store at Dyce. They got back to me a few minutes later to say there was no trace of my order number on their system. Finally they worked out that since my previous delivery two weeks ago, my postcode had been reallocated to the Peterhead store for home deliveries. They got Peterhead to phone me and they explained the computer system had gone mental which was why the delivery was marked as already delivered but in fact it was still scheduled and would arrive.

It got here right on time. 5 substitutions as usual but none that fussed me greatly. The computer system failure had also knocked out the electronic pad things you sign so it was back to bits of paper for now. The drivers always do their best but apparently with bugger all thanks or support from the company.

Something I found out at the last delivery. You get this email from Asda's system telling you whether the delivery is going to be in the first hour or the second hour of the 2 hour delivery slot so you know more exactly when to be in. The drivers don't even get told of this! They have no idea when to turn up other than sometime during the 2 hours.

The call centre must be the worst I've ever had to deal with. They never know anything about any order and every call ends with them saying they'll phone the store and then get back to me. It would save Asda a lot of money if they ditched the call centre and let people phone the stores direct on an 0800 number.
