I've met quite a few people over the years who boast about being ex RM/SBS/SAS/Para/Soecial Forces etc. usually it turns out they had a brother or family member in or failed the initial selection process or the 9 month course.

I met a guy recently who claimed to be in "Forty one commando" but a quick google and 41 unit was disbanded in 1980. He's also got the dagger emblem tattooed on his leg. He's only 35.

Why do people lie about this when it would be easy for them to slip up especially if they met s real one, who probably would be a little bit pissed off?

In the U.S. It's called "Stolen valour" and is a criminal offence. (I think)

I was in the Cubs. Hated it.

In Asia (Pattaya mainly) every other person is ex special forces!

Why!

Guy I used to work with used to pack the ration kit things for the army, reckons it was his favourite job after being a butcher. But I thought special forces guys drank their own wee and only ate rotten carcasses?

I met one of these best selling ex SAS authors a while ago, he was going out with a work colleague. A Geordie bloke I think, (I know it's a bit vague) is he a fantasist then? hehe
Re Ryan. There was a bit of controversy about his book and the details from serving and ex SP. I'm not saying he wasn't in it but may have made stuff up to sell books (which I liked. Bravo Two Zero).
I saw an interview with him and he seemed a bit of an arse.

I have met a few RM, serving at the time, through a family member who was also a RM. all of them were simmering lunatics but strangely controlled and moody. Scared the hell out of me.

They were on leave once in my home town and all dressed up as dorks (way before it was fashionable) and proceeded to fight their way though the high st! I just watched.
They all had big smiles on their faces in the wake of carnage left behind. hehe

Obviously I'm not calling you a liar but Ryan wrote 'The One That Got Away', McNab wrote 'Brave Two Zero'. biggrinwink
..and I recall they both got grief to varying degrees regarding the veracity of the contents of each.
Yeah probably right. It was a long time ago and I couldn't be bothered to google it.

It's amusing that a lot of posters who claim to know of someone in the RM/Para/Special Forces etc but then go on to say they never talked about it! hehe
Munchausen by proxy!

I can't help but think that's designed to get a response, someone who's been around for a few years would know a statement like that would go down like a lead balloon hehe

On a vaguely related note, being a double amputee I get asked all the time if I'm ex army. I suppose it'd be pretty easy for me to pretend I was if I wanted to, although I have no idea why I would want to. I really have no clue why someone would pretend to be anything, much least something that makes you look like such a wally when you get found out!
Interesting.

I saw an article about some woman complaining that ex forces personal get preferential treatment, wether it be better legs or less waiting time, than other civvie amputees.
I'm assuming if they are ex forces then the chance of them losing their limb(s) whilst in combat rather than in an office is pretty high.

What's your view on that?

I know nothing about nothing, but tens of millions sounds right to me. Some "celebs" get millions in compensation because someone said they had a smelly minge....were is the fairness in that.
That's ridiculous. All minges are smelly.

Not to go off topic too much, but it's my thread so I will, have you a thread Sir Alex of limbless about your mishap?

Nope! I can't imagine it'd be that interesting to others, but then I live with it every day so I suppose I would think that. I'll chuck a thread up if people would be interested, I don't want it to seem like I'm attention seeking though.
Well who knows. Obviously it would have been more interesting if you lost your head but we are glad you didn't.

Anyway. Walters...
