I read on an old forum about interesting articles so I thought it would be a good time killer!

Basically, the idea is to post a link from Wikipedia with a short briefing underneath as to what the link is all about (Unless the link is self-explanatory

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bloop
"The Bloop is the name given to an ultra-low frequency and extremely powerful underwater sound detected by the U.S. in 1997. The source of the sound remains unknown.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unusual_death...
"This article provides a list of unusual deaths – unique, or extremely rare circumstances recorded throughout history.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Robber_crab.jpg
"The front-most pair of legs has large claws used to open coconuts, and these claws (chelae) can lift objects up to 29 kilograms (64 lb)."

Fire away!

"Brian Douglas Wells (November 15, 1956 – August 28, 2003) was an American pizza delivery man who was killed by a time bomb fastened to his neck, purportedly under coercion from the maker of the bomb. After he was apprehended by the police for robbing a bank, the bomb exploded. The bizarre affair was subject to much attention in the mass media."
Saw VII idea?

The Hungerford massacre occurred in Hungerford, Berkshire, England, on 19 August 1987. The gunman, 27-year-old Michael Robert Ryan, armed with two semi-automatic rifles and a handgun, shot and killed sixteen people including his mother, and wounded fifteen others, then fatally shot himself.
I think the Hungerford police station got a serious wake up call after that incident. They most certaintly were not equipped for that.

I can sort of imagine the police force in a massive state of panic when that day unfolded...Im sure they 'stocked up' on some serious firepower soon after?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_death

"Fan death is an urban legend prevailing in South Korea in which an electric fan left running overnight in a closed room can cause the death of those inside."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_nyos

"Lake Nyos suddenly emitted a large cloud of CO2, which suffocated 1,700 people and 3,500 livestock in nearby villages. Though not completely unprecedented, it was the first known large-scale asphyxiation caused by a natural event."

^^Insane read, the place itself just looks like trouble :creeps

"Centralia is a borough and ghost town in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, United States. Its population has dwindled from over 1,000 residents in 1981 to 12 in 2005, 9 in 2007, and 7 in 2010 as a result of a mine fire burning beneath the borough since 1962."
Woooahh... it's Silent Hill!
Silent Hill [the location] was based on Centralia.

I visited there earlier this year, it really is that creepy. I was the only person there, apart from traffic driving through.
You didn't see any dead miners did you? The movie is terrible but the scenery is brilliant (from my memory).

Im glad you like it! So far, theres been some brilliant contributions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megalodon

"The existing fossil evidence indicates that megalodon likely exceeded 18 metres (59 ft) in total length. In 1994, a marine biologist Patrick J. Schembri claimed that the megalodon may have approached a maximum length of 25 metres (82 ft)."

The scale of that shark must have been immense, whenever I watch shark documentaries at home and they come across huge great whites, I cannot imagine what these guys must have been like idea

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Malloy

This is the story of a homeless man who was repeatedly tricked into drinking himself until death by a gang of fraudsters plotting against him. The idea behind it was to claim on life insurance on three counts on different policy, turns out he had quite a stomach! Awesome!

Personally, I'm a big fan of the war stories so this worked well for me:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simo_H%C3%A4yh%C3%A4

"Häyhä was credited with 505 confirmed kills of Soviet soldiers. He also kept snow in his mouth so that when breathing he wouldn't reveal his position."

Afghan girl, some may remember the picture. I am by no means a photographer, but the picture itself is quite amazing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afghan_Girl

"Gula was known throughout the world simply as the Afghan Girl until she was formally identified in early 2002."

Wow, not a way to go at all.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scaphism

"Scaphism, also known as the boats, was an ancient Persian method of execution designed to inflict torturous death."

Great to see the thread is still going biggrin

Here is my latest addition which I remembered after watching the royal wedding:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Fagan_inciden...

Michael Fagan was an intruder who broke into Buckingham Palace and entered Elizabeth II's bedchamber in the early hours of 9 July 1982. The unemployed father of four children managed to evade electronic alarms as well as both palace and police guards.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_A-40

A Soviet attempt to allow a tank to glide into a battlefield after being towed aloft by a plane.

Hope you like
