Was in the gym recently talking to the guys in there rather than working out, which seems a past-time for many people these days, anyhow...

There are 4 types of machines in our gym that measure calories burned. The treadmill, cross-trainer, bikes and rowing machine.
The first three all need you to input your weight as they do in most gyms, though they don't use height or bodyfat, it will give a vague guideline to calories burned, though it is a complete ballpark figure of course.

So the challenge set: what's the fastest time any of us could reach 1000calories on any machine or a combination of. The only catch being that if you take a break, that time is included.

Anyone up for joining me and seeing how quickly you can do it?

^^^that's quite an impressive time to set.

I'm going to be trying it out this lunchtime so will see how I do.

I usually go on the crosstrainer for 30 minutes, and have got the calories burned to 718 as my highest so far, so it will be close beating your time as i'm likely to slow down a lot for the last 300 calories smile

At my normal rate on the treadmill (according to the treadmill figures anyway) it would take me about 51-52 mins.

Usually takes just over 5 mins to burn 100 cals.

thats using my weight of 85kgs
what speed do you run at?

Well, had a go at it this lunchtime.

weighing in at 85kgs, I managed 1000 calories in 45mins 28seconds.

I started out at too high a level, so was completely out of it by the end. Will be having another go tomorrow but it takes quite a bit of motivation for me, and I can see myself actually doing worse smile

Brilliant effort! As you know it's really tough to keep speed up on a high resistance. I won't be challenging you though as I was maxing out for wayyyy too long!
I used a pretty random level setting thing on it.
level 18 for 6 mins, then 15 for 1 min, 18 for 5 mins, then 15 for 2 mins, and so on so the level 18 went 6 5 4 3 2 1, and the 15 went 1 2 3 4 5 6, then the rest at level 15.

tomorrow i'm going to have a go at purely level 16. may be boring, but i'll see if I can get the RPM up a bit higher this time.

I'm running 10k after work tonight, I usually burn 930 calories if I am taking it easy so I am going to have a bit of a blast between 3k and 7k and see if I can do 1000 - 10k usually takes me about 38mins.

I'm 6ft5 and 88kg. I use the adidas micoach app to track everything.
That is very impressive. I think I may try beating my crosstrainer time on a treadmill next week; the only problem being I hate treadmills, running outside is fine, but I find treadmills really boring!

Does it have to be in a gyn? can't I just have a game of squash?
Just so long as you can measure it. I hva eno idea how you could measure your calories during sqaush though?!?

Well had another go on the cross trainer today, rather than varying the level, I just stuck to level 16, and aimed at 80rpm, which did falter a bit towards the end.

1000 calories in 43mins 29s. a long way from BrabusMog above though!

on the cross trainer 1000 calories in 40mins 39s.

will try the rower in a few days and see how I get on with that. I don't think there is much more I could do on the crosstrainer now without breaking myself!

I thought I was just being a cynical, miserable sod.

I figured on half? But anyways, how many people will jump off these machines and stick a Mars Bar down their throat claiming they'd earnt it?

Now I am being a cynical, miserable sod ; )
I asked earlier whether a dedicated HR monitor would more accurate.

I agree the accuracy may be dubious, but as long as it's consistently dubious...
Haha, yes the machines are way out. After 40 mins, no matter how hard I have worked out, I reckon 500 calories would be far more reasonable. On the other hand, after trying this a few times a week on top of my usual routine I am losing about 1lb extra a week.

What it does give you though is a very good way of gauging your progress.

managed a lowly 43:46 for 1000calories on the cross trainer today, just wasn't feeling.
think my choice of music may have let me down. though the radio stations of GTA vice city is amusing, doesn't motivate you much.

we have the same concept2 rowers in our gym, so will be starting using those next week and see how I get on there. I don't think i'll be beating my 40:39 time on the cross trainer anyhow!

Do you guys find it easier after say the first 10k? I usually do 10k on the bike, personal best so far is 21.45 which I don't think was particularly quick but I was knackered after it. Not great at 21 and 14.5 stone... I'd be tempted to go more than 10k but I doubt I'd be able to walk for a week after it.
actually yes, If I can find a decent pace and find something else to concentrate on then it starts to get easier from 10 mins in until around 35 mins on the crosstrainer. When I'm out on a run, I can go for an hour without really thinking about the running.

I've heard the calls on the machines way over estimates the work done. Some geeky rowers calced calls for different paces on the erg. For me at sub 2 min pace I'd need to pull for an hour at least to burn 1k calls.
yeah completely agreed. there is no way on earth I am burning 100calories in 40 mins. Halving it would probably not even be close.

But it does provide a comparison between machines and each visit smile
